I love the rain. In summer. Even storms. I simply love watching the lightening in the sky and listening to the crashing thunder. I was reminded of this today when Ziva at Ziva’s Inferno and MikeWJ at Too Many Mornings both posted pictures of rain as part of their 30 day photo meme.
The last summer storm we had it just poured. The wind picked up and the lightening was amazing. My wife jumped up and ran to the powder room yelling “Dufus, Dufus, come here, come here.” She thought she’d be safest in the middle of the house away from any windows. Meanwhile, I stood at the patio screen door, the glass door flung back, soaking (literally) in the summer storm.
By the way, the wind was so bad it blew down the stage at our local Bluesfest, nearly killing Cheap Trick!
As a result of the storm our power went out. Talk about karma biting you on the ass. Serves me right for communing with the rain and wind gods.
I don’t know what it is about me and my attraction to rain. A couple of weeks ago my son and I were golfing when a storm broke out mid way through the 17th hole. My son was quite concerned about the likelihood of lightening and told me “Dad, don’t swing your club too high. You’re a human lightening rod!” We had to stop playing. Well, at least we had lower scores. So my karma’s back on track.
Oh, and for those of you that got my play on words in the headline, here’s a little treat for you…

I love rain, but I don’t like being out in it because water makes me nervous. I like watching it. Electrical storms I sort of like too, but because Harry wants to sit his furry 90 pound butt in my lap when it happens, eh! not such a good time after all. I don’t like the ocean or lakes or rivers or showers for that matter. But I’m not afraid of sitting in a tub.

It’s amazing the impact storms have on animals, isn’t it. Our cats disappear into the basement and cower in a corner until the thunder stops. I remember as a kid someone telling me that thunder occurred when the angels were bowling. Then I learned it had to do with hot and cold air meeting. I kind of like the first explanation better.

Dang! All this talk about rain and that’s about all I’ve got to look forward to for the next four days, at least.
Sucks to to me.
Anyway, I mentioned a “rain” song to Ziva – but that’s a happy song. Yet it – and your post – also reminded me of a rendition of, “I Can’t Stand The Rain …” recorded by Tina Turner. It turns out Joplin also had recorded this song. I only remembered Turner’s recording (which I love), but Joplin’s is just as good. For your enjoyment:

Great song. But it’s not Janis, it’s The Commitments. The soundtrack from that movie is awesome.

I like the first explanation better too. And it makes a lot more sense.

It certainly did to a kid. And continues to. I haven’t worked out the cause of lightening yet. Angel farts?

Great post, Dufus! I wonder if you remember that scene in Caddyshack, when the preacher is out on the golf course, playing the greatest game of his life when it starts to rain, and hard. He raises his club to the heavens and curses God, and is immediately struck dead by a bolt of lightening. Great scene, and reminiscent of you standing at the back door watching the storm that almost, but not quite, killed Cheap Trick. Damn the luck. I do the same thing, by the way, brother.

And reminiscent of me on the 17th hole in the rain and lightening! Yeah, that was a funny scene. What happened to the stage at Bluesfest (Cheap Trick? Blues? Yeah, I know) was tragic. But the loss of Cheap Trick? Meh. Dream Police notwithstanding.

I can so see myself at that patio screen door, the glass door flung back, soaking in the summer storm. I’m just like you, I go stand on the balcony and look up towards the sky and just enjoy feeling the cold raindrops on my skin. Wonderful post, Dufus.

There’s nothing else quite like it. The power of nature can be awesome!…well within reason.
